Christie’s New York hosted the auction to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The doll, all beautiful and perfect, set a new record when everybody in the room heard “Sold for $302,500!” When the new owner of the doll – a private collector from Asia – took his prize he must have felt wonderful to know that every cent of the money he had paid went to BCRF.
To understand why this Barbie was so expensive, you must know what she was wearing. The gorgeous dress and the little lovely pink shoes had their part in giving the doll a unique charm, but what was most important was the jewelry that she wore.
One carat fancy vivid pink emerald-cut diamond and over three carats of white diamonds were part of her adornments. These formed a unique Stefano Canturi cubist piece of jewelry. To go with the beautiful necklace, Canturi designed a diamond ring for the doll’s right hand. What did the jewelry designer himself have to say about his creation? “I wanted the jewelry design to pay homage to Barbie’s modern yet timeless style, this is why I applied my Cubism design concept to her look; it is perfect for her,” And we wouldn’t dare say otherwise.
