World’s Most Expensive Pigeon Fetches $328,000 at Auction (2)

As China’s economy continues to flourish, more and more of its citizens feel financially secure and willing to pay good money for the things they want very badly. The most recent example of lavish spending in the country is Hu Zhen Yu’s  purchase of a Dutch Dolce Vita pigeon: he paid a whopping €250,400 (approx. $328,000) for the bird.

The buyer is a Chinese shipping magnate who last year sponsored a pigeon race that offered 7 million Yuan (approx. $1.1 million) in prizes. His new race pigeon was part of an online auction by Pieter Veenstra who sold 254 birds. According to Belgium-based PIPA (Pigeon Paradise), the whole sale was a new record, as it raised a staggering $2.5 million.

The former most expensive pigeon was a retired Flemish pigeon (8 years old at the time of the sale) that was renowned for its long flights. It went for $225,000.
