Dental health is extremely important as it can impact other areas of your health. Excess plaque on the teeth can actually be a culprit for higher blood pressure. Improving your dental health will take a proactive approach as nobody is going to brush your teeth for you. You need to create a list of what you want to start doing or improve in your daily routine. Take time to research the various factors that impact oral health. Doing something like quitting smoking will not only make you healthier overall but will help brighten your smile. The following are things you can start doing today to improve your dental health.

Get Your Teeth Cleaned Twice a Year

You need to see a dentist regularly to get your teeth cleaned and for a checkup. A dentist can give you advice on areas you need to focus on where the plaque buildup was larger. This can help you avoid cavities as focusing on molars could be a weakness in your brushing routine. Seeing a dentist in Fuquay Varina or your area twice a year will help protect your oral health. Find a dentist that you are comfortable with and is in close proximity to your home.

Add a Few Minutes to Your Brushing Routine Daily

Brushing your teeth is rarely the most entertaining part of your day. Adding a minute to your morning and nightly routine can produce results. You might see your smile brighten in a matter of weeks and everyone wants a brighter smile. If you feel like you brush for an appropriate amount of time, you can add another brushing at lunch. It is not uncommon to see coworkers brushing their teeth in the office bathroom.

Cut Down Soda and Alcohol Consumption

Soda and alcohol both dry out the mouth which allows food to stick to teeth. Saliva helps food be processed and swallowed with both soda and alcohol dehydrating the mouth. Cutting soda out of your diet shouldn’t be too difficult as there are other drinks with the same caffeine levels with a fraction of the sugar. Alcohol consumption is fine in moderation although you should be drinking water when consuming alcohol to avoid mouth dehydration.

Floss and Use Mouthwash Even If It Is Uncomfortable

Flossing is rarely done as it can be painful on the gums. What most people do not realize is that the pain comes from unhealthy gums. This pain will decrease with consistent flossing over time and will help get those pieces of food stuck in the teeth. Brushing will not always remove food from the teeth so flossing should be taken as seriously as brushing. Mouthwash should also be used to supplement your current oral hygiene routine. Find a mouthwash that is not too harsh as this is a common complaint and reason people cite for not using it.

Use the next couple of weeks to implement the changes mentioned above. You will see results and your smile will not only look better but feel better as well.
