Top Tips for Ensuring Successful Hair Transplant Surgery

Just a couple of decades ago, hair transplants were something to be very hush hush about and, if you had one, you probably wouldn’t admit. But in 2020, that stigma has all but completely disappeared. With better marketing and high-profile celebrities talking openly about their own experience, anyone can get a hair transplant now without having to hide it.

The rise in demand has also led to improvements in the surgery itself. The vast majority of hair transplants are done without a hitch. But, if you want to increase your chances of a hassle-free experience, there are some ways you can prepare. Take a look at our top tips to find out more.

1. Do Your Research

If you want a successful hair transplant, the first step is to do your research. More specifically, you need to look into finding a Hair Transplant Clinic that you can trust. Make sure you choose one that is fully licensed and follows the government guidelines on health and safety. Once you’ve found a reputable clinic, always do a quick Google search for reviews to make sure they live up to their word.

It’s also a good idea to read up on the different types of hair transplants available, too, such as FUE. FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, is the most popular hair transplant treatment amongst men and women because it’s much less invasive than other procedures and has quicker recovery time. If you don’t want to be stuck inside for too long after your surgery, FUE is the option for you.

2. Prepare in Advance

Before you have your hair transplant, you should have an appointment with your clinic. If they want you to jump straight into the procedure without one, this is a big red flag and you should think about looking elsewhere. This appointment gives you time to prepare yourself for the procedure and understand what’s going to happen. It’s also the perfect time to ask your surgeon any questions and ease concerns that you might have.

Alongside your appointment, you can prepare for your surgery at home to make sure it’s as hassle-free as possible. Here are some tips you should follow:

  • Stop smoking at least one full day before your surgery
  • Avoid alcohol for at least three days before your surgery
  • Massage your scalp once a day
  • Make sure you’re not taking any medication that could affect the transplant

3. Arrange Some Time for Recovery

Just like any surgery, you’re going to need some time to recover after a hair transplant. So, make sure to book yourself some time off work to rest, or switch to working from home instead of at the office. If you have any plans soon after your surgery, you’ll want to cancel these, too. Your transplant area is going to be pretty red and sore in the days after the treatment, so the last thing you’ll want to do is head out of the house.

4. Take Care of Your New Hair

When you’re in the process of recovery, you’ll have to be very gentle with your transplant area. By taking care of it, you give those new hairs the best chance of taking root and creating a full head of hair. Here are some tips you should definitely pay attention to:

  • Try to sleep with your head elevated by using an extra pillow to avoid swelling
  • Continue to avoid alcohol and cigarettes in the days after your surgery
  • Use a gentle shampoo recommended by your surgeon
  • Keep the area out of the sun whilst you’re recovering

These days, hair transplants have incredibly high success rates. Even so, it’s always best to do everything you can to help make your experience as hassle-free as possible. The better you prepare and look after your transplant, the more likely it is to work.
