For the 2018 FIFA World Cup that will take place in Russia, Populous was commissioned to create a truly amazing stadium, called Rostov Stadium. This is the company’s fourth such project in the country, and it will have an impressive capacity of 45,000 seats for the World Cup. The number will be reduced to 25,000 afterwards, but this is still a grand project anyhow.
Apparently Populous got their inspiration for Rostov from a series of archeological mounds (old pagan burial places) that define the landscape along the bank of the Don River. The stadium will be part of a green city project, and it is expected to be “a great catalyst for the city and this part of the river”, according to Damon Lavelle, Principal at Populous.
