Historic J. Purdey & Sons Shotguns up for Auction

These historic shotguns will be sold at the upcoming Bonhams sale of Sporting Guns in London. The event will take place on December 13, and specialists expect the lot to fetch between $64,000 and $96,000. This fine pair of 12-bore guns by J. Purdey & Sons used to belong to WW I commander Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, and are still perfectly functional today.

Their makers have confirmed that the shotguns date back to 1930, but they seem to have had very little use since then. This explains why they look so good after all these decades and why they are still in optimum working condition. The winning bidder will also receive a custom leather and velvet casing for the guns. Talking about the special lot, Patrick Hawes, the sporting guns specialist at Bonhams, said: “It feels as if you are holding history in your hands when hefting these shotguns”.Historic J.
