Ian Hawthorne creates bespoke wooden boxes for different purposes and they are all tailor-made in terms of materials, hardware, lining, internal layout and personalization (by pyrography or plaques). Recently he had the privilege of crafting a royal box, commissioned as a wedding gift for Prince William and his wife, Catherine.
Made from Native Sycamore, it features two lift-out trays, each covered in black lamb nappa divided into twelve sections. The lid consists of six pieces of Ripple Sycamore and is decorated with the royal monogram at the center. The monogram was created from dyed blue and boxwood veneers. The borders of the lid were made with black acetal. Finally the whole box was finished with three coats of blonde shellac and then wax to obtain a smooth and silky finish. The box was priced at £1,675.
