In this world there’s the dreamers and the doers. In which group do you fall? It’s easy to come up with fabulous ideas and amazing goals that will turn your life around. But getting around to working at them hard enough to achieve them, to achieve extreme results, you have to be a doer, and leave the dreamers behind. It’s not as hard as some people claim. With a few basic rules it’s possible to achieve nearly anything. You don’t have to be a genius or have the ‘right connections’ in order to reach your own self-defined peak. It’s not wealth or luck or networking that will eventually bring you everything you want out of life. It’s setting your course, and then sticking to it no matter what. Here’s a few hacks to help keep you focused and on track to become the amazing person you know you can be.
Create the right routine
We all have our daily routines. Dreamers tend to think of them as something that keeps them ‘stuck in a rut’ or as ‘the daily rat race,’ but doers see routine as key to accomplishing their dreams and goals. That’s because we get better at the things we do each day — not that the things themselves change or get easier, but because our ability to do them increases..
Don’t be afraid to tinker with your routine, your post workout supplements, or to tweak and tighten it up so it serves your own purposes better. Know what you want, plan how to get it, and then stick to that routine until you get it. It can be as simple as learning a new word each day — it takes, what, five minutes a day? But at the end of the month you’ve added thirty words to your vocabulary. From there it’s an easy reach to begin learning a new language, if that is part of your long term goals. And it all happens because of your routine. People who keep to a routine develop a profound ability to discipline themselves.
Stay focused
By staying focused on your goals and routine you are telling yourself you mean business — that you’re serious about what you want to accomplish. You also let the outside world know that you’re a serious player when it comes to goals and routines — and they are less likely then to bother you with trivial distractions.
Does this mean you need to cancel your Netflix subscription? Possibly. Be honest with yourself and calculate how many hours a week you spend watching it. If it’s more than five, cancel your subscription. Save that money for a new car, because, as a famous banker once said, “Where you focus your time is where your energy goes; and where your energy goes is where your money either comes from.”
But at the same time, don’t become obsessed with your goals to achieve excellence. There are going to be bumps in the road and walls to get around — take them in stride, laugh them off, take a breather if you have to, and then get going again. Admitting temporary defeat is a healthy mindset.
