Sotheby’s to Sell Rare Historic Photos of China and Taiwan

On May 14, Sotheby’s will hold its Travel, Atlases, Maps & Natural History sale in London. The lots include numerous extraordinary items with historic significance, including a collection of rare and old photographs of China and Taiwan.

One lot consists of a beautiful collection of 18 early photographs that date back to the 1860s, and which were taken during the Second Opium War. They were shot by photographer FeliceBeato and include the very first panorama photo of the old city of Beijing.

Another important album to be offered at the upcoming auction was put together by Scottish photographer John Thomson. He traveled a lot in the 19th century China and Taiwan, and now a set of 71 photographs that he took during his journeys can be purchased by photo enthusiasts from around the world.
