Sotheby’s to Sell Rare Blue Diamond in Hong Kong

It doesn’t necessarily have to be extremely large for a diamond to be exceptionally rare and important. The best proof of that is this fabulous 7.59 carat vivid blue diamond, which is expected to set a new record price per carat at an upcoming Hong Kong auction.

Known as “The Premier Blue”, it is a round cut gem (very uncommon for colored diamonds) the size of a shirt button. Sotheby’s will try to find it a new owner on October 7, and they chose China for this event, acknowledging the fact that the luxury market in Asia is still growing.

Deputy chairman of Sotheby’s in Asia, Quek Chin Yeow, said that the beautiful diamond is believed to fetch around $19 million, which would make it the new record holder of the “highest price per carat” title. Until the actual auction in fall, The Premier Blue will be previewed around Asiatogether with other lots.
