Sotheby’s Sells 1975 Sympathique Clock for New Record Price

The master behind this masterpiece was Abraham-Louis Breguet. He was an exquisite horologist who invented many of the best features that we still use today in the watch making industry. For instance, he developed the overcoil system, the tourbillon, and the automatic winding mechanisms.

One of his many outstanding creations include this 1975 Sympathique clock, which sold for a mind-boggling sum of over $6.8 million. This piece is actually a system that includes a clock and a watch, with the first holding the latter in a cradle, automatically rewinding and adjusting it. Its name was specifically chosen by its maker to signify harmony and concord.

The Sympathique is now the new record holder of the title of most expensive clock ever sold at auction. It was sold at an Important Watches and Clocks auction by Sotheby’s in New York. It is a 217 years old piece, boasting gold elements and red tortoiseshell details, and it is one of only 10 to 12 such clocks still “alive” today. An absolute wonder!
