A brand new record for the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction was set by the renowned Oppenheimer Blue stone, which brought in no less than $58 million. The diamond weighs in at 14.62 carats, and it is actually the largest Vivid Blue diamond ever put up for auction. Set in a ring complemented by a pair of smaller trapeze-shaped diamonds, this precious gem is a part of the highly exclusive “Fancy Vivid” category, which is amazing since only about one per cent of blue diamonds actually fall into this classification.
The stone was named after the late Sir Philip Oppenheimer, who gifted it to his wife at some point in his life. His choice was based on the stone’s “perfect hue, impeccable proportions and fabulous rectangular shape,” at least according to Francois Curiel, the chairman of Christie’s.
