19th Century European Art Sale by Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s 19th Century European Art sale is a bi-annual event that will take place on May 9. The auction will include some really amazing works by famous artists such as Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, William Bouguereau, Gustave Courbet, and Jean-Leon Gerome. Even though all lots are remarkable, some of them stand out as truly special.

Among these is an 1876 Jean Beraud depicting the bohemian 19th century Paris. It is called Leaving Montmartre Cemetery and it was chosen to be illustrated on the cover of the auction house’s May catalogue cover. Experts believe it will sell for $600,000 to $800,000.

Also estimated at the same value, a beautiful Nu Coucheby Gustave Courbet evokes the standards of beauty of the mid-19th century. The nude was painted in 1866, the same year in which the artist completed his famous L’Origine du monde. This piece will spend some time on display in Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries starting May 3.

Another remarkable lot is the Palacio de Carlos V, Alcazar de Sevilla, a 1908 painting by famous Spanish impressionist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida ($300,000 – $500,000). Finally, the superb 1868 Moissonneuse by French painter William Bouguereau is believed to sell for $600,000 – $800,000.
