Fabulous Diamond Lesedi la Rona (5)

The largest rough, high-quality diamond discovered so far is named Lesedi la Rona, and it was found at a mine owned by the Lucara Diamond Corporation in Botswana, Africa. The stone is about the same size of a tennis ball, and it weighs in at 1,109 carats, which is why some believe that it might sell for more than $70 million.

This would make it the most expensive diamond ever sold, and since stones such as this are so incredibly rare, it would take a while before a similar one would be discovered. According to auctioneer Sotheby’s, Lesedi la Rona features “exceptional transparency,” which definitely has something to do with its suggested price tag. The current record holder for the most expensive diamond ever sold is the Blue Moon Diamond that was bought in 2015 for $48.5 million. Lesedi la Rona is scheduled to go under the hammer on June 29, 2016 in London.
