Even though it features just 828 square feet of living space, this modern home in Melbourne, Australia includes everything that one could possibly need in order to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. The house was designed by Sean Godsell Architects and is based on an already existing heritage timber cottage. The local authorities deemed the cottage to be of historical significance, which meant that it could not be torn down and replaced with a brand new home.
Therefore, the architects decided to keep the front section of the cottage intact and insert a brand new section at the rear of the block. The cottage interior boasts a cathedral ceiling as well as a pair of timber posts that provide support for a ridge beam. There is also a pair of light “cannons”, which ensure that a central living space benefits from natural lighting. In order to prevent overlooking and overshadowing, the architects kept the height of the addition at a minimum and implemented a glass roof. The roof flaunts an automated timber sunscreen that guarantees adequate shading in the summer and plenty of sunlight in the winter.
