“One in a Billion” Gold Nugget Sold for $400,000

Washington Gold Nugget

How would you feel if you one day found a huge – seven-pounds-huge! – gold nugget in your back yard? Ecstatic, terrified, …rich? Probably all three, but unfortunately chances are really small such luck will ever strike you. As a matter of fact, the case that we will tell you about next is not that much about luck either.

The finder of this enormous nugget has got some undeveloped property near the old mining community of Washington. He had his land assayed by a specialist and found out that there was a real chance he might find some gold there. So he started his search with the help of a good friends and some high-tech devices. Finally, after digging in dirt and water, they came across this beautiful immense nugget and two smaller ones.

The massive piece was sold this week in Sacramento at an auction and it fetched  $400,000. The price is higher than the actual value of the solid gold, but this is due to the fact that the nugget is so large, that it can be considered a “one-in-a-billion discovery”, as the press release states. The buyer (who was not present at the auction, but was represented by someone from Spectrum Numismatics International) also had to pay $60,000 to the auction house, asides from the sale cost.

Of course, the owner of the land plans on revisiting his propriety when the earth gets a little dryer in the area. Who knows what he might come across next time!
