Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction, which took place last month, exceeded all expectations with a lot of items being sold for more than previously estimated.
The Chateau Lafite’s 1869 vintages were sold for HK$1.8 million ($230,000) which is actually a new record. There were three bottles of the precious wine and all three went to the same telephone bidder from Asia.
Actually, all of the auction’s most expensive lots were sold to Asian private collectors. Another impressively expensive bottle sold in Hong Kong last week was the HK$1.3 million Lafite 1870, followed by the HK$1 million case (twelve bottles) of Chateau’s 1982. They were first believed to reach the HK$80,000 and HK$280,000 thresholds respectively.
