Nature-Inspired Penthouse by Johnson Chou

Designed by studio Johnson Chou, this spectacular penthouse apartment is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can find it in the Candy Factory Lofts, being one of the city’s “first residential adaptive re-use projects of its kind”. Offering 2,700 square feet of lavish spaces, this loft is owned by an avid sportsman who loves travelling and camping in remote areas of the wilderness.

His passion for nature is what dictated the interior design of this gorgeous penthouse. He wanted a loft that would evoke the ever-fascinating nature, while also keeping a very urban character. The spaces feature many variations in level, with steps and ramps that imitate the ever-changing natural landscapes.

The ground floor, which includes the living, dining, kitchen, and study/guest quarters, is intentionally dark and very much based on the interplay of light and shadow, evoking the bushes and undergrowth of a forest. On the upper level, however, things become much more airy and luminous, giving the impression of finally reaching the top of a tall tree. A tree/bird cage-like staircase connects the two levels of this remarkable dwelling.
