Renowned Australian designer Marc Newson has come up with an ingenious alternative to classic hourglasses. Designed for Ikepod, the luxurious sandglasses are not exactly using sand to measure time. Instead, Newson chose to give more glamour to his creations by using nanoballs coated in various materials, including yellow gold.
Each Ikepod Hourglass is hand blown and features eight million nanoballs, just enough for a 60 minute timer. The minuscule particles can be coated with carbon, nickel, copper and gold. The priciest model is of course the gold one, at $28,500. The other versions sell for $15,000. Smaller Ikepod Hourglasses are also available at $13,000. They are 10 minute timers and have “only” 1.3 million nanoballs.
