La Miniatura Residence: A Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece

La Miniatura Residence: A Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece (3)

Built in 1923 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, this remarkable home in Pasadena, California, is one of the only four “textile block” residences created by the fabled architect. This is actually his first in the series, and it is quite inappropriately called La Miniatura. The residence boasts 4 bedrooms, 2 kitchens, a formal dining room, a large living room, 4 bathrooms, and semi-detached garages.

Some experts consider this the finest of all Wright’s textile block houses, and one of the most important examples ofresidential architecture in the world. It has received a lot of praise over the years, and it even made it onto the National Register of Historic Places, back in 1976. Also known as the Millard House, it was originally built for Alice Millard, a dealer of rare books.

One of its many alluring features is first of all its location, which the architect’s grandson, Eric Lloyd Wright, describes as the keyfactor behind the project’s huge success. Then there are the numerous perforations in the concrete walls that give the impression of weightlessness and openness. LaMiniatura is now on the market priced at $4.49 million.
