Back in March we wrote about how Jeff Koons’ Pink Panther was expected to sell for up to $30 million. As the proof edition of three, this porcelain sculpture from 1988 was hoped to set a new record for the American artist. However, when Sotheby’s sold it two days ago at their Spring Sale of Contemporary Art, the work failed to meet the pre-sale expectations. It only fetched $16.8 million. This means that the huge Balloon Flower (Magenta), which went for $25.7 million in 2008, remains Koons’ most expensive work sold to date.
