House of the Day: Peach Farm by Bates Masi Architects

Peach Farm by Bates Masi Architects 2

Another dream house is what Bates Masi Architects have created in East Hampton, New York. It is a project destined to host large and long family reunions, as the clients wanted to have a home where their loved ones from England could come and spend unforgettable moments with them.

So this is exactly what the architects did. Surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes and close to an old peach orchard, this place can offer serene but never dull moments. The house was designed to provide diversity and entertainment for everyone inside, and for this reason some key elements were introduced. For instance, the kitchen can easily be one of the family’s favorite gathering places when cooking time comes. It features rolling cutting boards that can go back and forth the counter (like an assembly line in a plant) and encourage everyone to participate at the cooking process.

Another example are the versatile tables in this home. The most interesting one is the dining table that has a stainless steel trough that runs through its middle and which can be used for different purposes. You can fill it with ice and then place your beverages in it, or you can use different lids with holes in them for candles, or flower vases, or bottles.

The clients wanted just one more thing in order for their home to be perfect in every detail: they needed a house that would stand the test of time, but which would also gradually change with every passing year and grow old with them. For this purpose, Bates Masi Architects introduced some materials that would change their appearance and still remain strong and durable. Two good examples would be the copper roofing and siding which in time will turn green, and the limestone that will get darker with every year.

And now to top it all off, the lovely Peach Farm is also environment-friendly, as it features organic finishes, green roofs, triple glazed windows, and even a geothermal heating and cooling system.
