Hotchkiss Residence in Vancouver Washington (14)

Hotchkiss Residence is a lovely home completed by Scott Edwards Architecture in 2010 and built by Hammer & Hand. Located on the Columbia river in Vancouver, Washington, it was created for a couple in their 70s and it offers 1,988 square feet of space. The owners have lived on the property for over four decades in a modular home that was just too old and needed to be rebuilt.

The new, contemporary house has 1.5 bedrooms and offers lovely views of the river and of Mt. Hood. It was built to face the 9 months of rain in the area and to capture as much sunlight as possible during wintertime. By reaching deep into the living room, the winter sun passively warms up the exposed concrete floors.

There is a single slope of roof for the house, which starts above the bedroom and progressively rises towards the living room. “The roof also cantilevers over the southern facing deck, creating a space that is enjoyed and utilized year round by the owners”. Hotchkiss residence is – as its owners desired – characterized by simplicity.Hotchkiss Residence in Vancouver Washington (11)
