Frida Kahlo Miniature Self-Portrait Could Fetch $1.2 Million

Sotheby’s will soon have the opportunity to sell an incredibly valuable piece of art, a miniature self-portrait of Frida Kahlo. This is the smallest work of the famous Mexican artist and it was specially created as a gift to her lover, Jose Bartoli. The back of the locket-size painting says “Para Bartoli con amor”, which means “For Bartoli with love”.

The work measures only 2 inches by 1-5/8 inches and is particularly special because it depicts a young and serene Frida (most of her self portraits show her in blood or tears). As the head of Sotheby’s Latin American Masterpieces sais, “This is one of the sexiest Khalos”. The most expensive Kahlo ever sold was a painting named “Roots”, which sold for $5.61 million in 2005. This self-portrait is expected to fetch up to $1.2 million.
