Recently sold for $262,900, this 1931poster is a record breaker. It is the most expensive insert movie poster ever sold at auction and it is also the only one of its kind known to exist so far. Measuring 14 inches by 36 inches, it was created for the iconic horror movie Frankenstein. Its dimensions are different from regular ones, because it was meant to be inserted in the theaters’ display cases.
Its last owner, Keith Johnson, who lives in Ottawa, Illinois, found it in an antique back in 1968 or 1969, when he was only a teenager. For almost three decades the large print was kept in the man’s closet, and nobody knew about its rarity and cultural significance. Heritage Auctions managed to sell it for a very good price during its recent movie poster sale in Dallas.
