Last week, Christie’s found a new owner for the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction. American photographer and film director Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled #96” depicts the artist herself, lying supine on the floor, wearing a skirt and a cashmere top and holding a torn piece from the newspaper classifieds.

This was the fisrt time that the photograph appeared at auction and even though it had been previously expected to “only” fetch between $1.5 million and $2 million, the lot actually went for a whooping $3.89 million.

“Untitled #153”, another Cindy Sherman famous work made in 1985, was sold last year for  $2.7 million. Andreas Gursky’s “99 Cent II”, taken in 2001 and sold in 2007 for $3.34 million, was the previous most expensive photograph in the world.
