There’re very few things money can’t buy. Liechtenstein can be hired for $70,000 a night, Musha Cay island can be rent for over $37,000, Sir Richard Branson’s heart-shaped private island in Australia can be rent for only $8,000 per night and two of Australia’s mountain peaks can be purchased with just $175,000. But if all that is not enough for you, then you should think about buying yourself a town!
Yes, that’s actually possible, thanks to Twila Merril, the American businesswoman who currently owns Scenic, a really small town in South Dakota. According to her daughter LeeAnn Keester, Merril’s health is not allowing her to properly manage her property (which includes the 12-acre town and 34 more acres of surrounding land).
When Merril first listed the property, over two years ago, she asked $3 million for it, but since no one seemed interested in the offer, she eventually lowered the price to $799,000. Quite a bargain, actually. Scenic has got two houses, two jails (interesting, isn’t it?), a post office, a museum, a saloon, a train depot, a dance hall, a convenience store and two retail stores. There are only eight inhabitants in the town at the moment, but no one knows for how long they will remain in it.
Some 700 drivers drive their cars go through Scenic every day, without even looking back. So will you be the one to stop and even buy the property?
