It looks like the rich are actively trying to look poorer lately, what with the distressed/ripped jeans, ripped shirts and distressed runners that are becoming more and more “fashionable” these days. Barneys New York even tried to sell out a pair sneakers that were actually “styled wrapped with duct tape,” but things didn’t really go according to plan once people started to troll them for it. For example, a Scottish comedian named Limmy officially accused Barneys of “poverty appropriation,” and many people would agree that he has a point.
The truly ridiculous part is that the sneakers in question were offered for $585, which is a lot to pay for a shoe that’s basically ripped and fixed with duct tape. Considering that there are people out there who can’t afford to buy a new pair of shoes when their current one breaks apart, trying to sell a broken shoe for almost $600 is bound to stir up some controversy.
