Welding is a widely used metalworking technique in the construction industry. There are many different types of welding, but most of them rely on electricity or heat to fuse two metals. Here are three common ways that welding is used when constructing a metal building.

1. Main Structural Support

Welding plays a vital role in the structural integrity of a metal building. Welders are responsible for using their high-powered equipment to forge together the steel beams, columns, and joists into sturdy structures. Rather than simply bolting pieces together, welders ensure that they connect correctly with a weld that can withstand the pressure of the elements without breaking apart.

2. Attachment of Walls and Roofs

A building mainly comprises its walls and roof. You will see welders attaching the walls to the top of the steel frame with a ladder weld which is excellent for attaching thinner pieces. On other occasions, they will use a T-shaped attachment to connect beams into ridges on top of the walls. They might use a side-rail weld to secure the roof to the main structure.

3. Railings, Parts, and Features

Ladders and railings are a staple for any metal building. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to get up to our ceilings and from one side of the room to the other. Not only do we need ladders, but we also want them sturdy. That’s where welders come in because they know how to create steel parts and features that can withstand the wildest weather conditions and structural loads.

Different types of joints are used during welding. Typical welds for metal buildings are butt joints, lap joints, and corner joints.

Butt Joint

A butt joint is when two pieces of metal are butted up against each other with no overlapping edges. This type of weld is commonly used to join thicker pieces of metal together. There are no special considerations for this weld. Just clamp the pieces together and apply the heat to join them effectively.

Lap Joint

It is when two pieces of metal overlap each other in a V shape. It is important always to take measurements of each part first. Proper measures ensure that the overlap lines up exactly where it should when attached. Otherwise, you might find a smaller or larger opening than you wanted once it’s all done.

Corner Joint

It is a weld that attaches two pieces of metal at a 90-degree angle. Corner joints are trendy in metal buildings. However, they require you to be precise and accurate so that everything lines up correctly. One is needed to be careful when executing this type of weld because other stresses come into play and affect the stability of the overall piece. Always be sure to consult a professional if you have any questions.

When building a metal building, make sure you have a welding contractor on hand. With the right expertise on your team, you can ensure that your structure will be as strong as its design.
