If you were one of the uber-rich, what would you spend your money on? Today we’re taking a look at three celebrities who have splashed their cash on private jets. Private jets are beautiful crafts, not to mention convenient to own. Here’s how the elite of our world have made a home in the sky out of private jets.
Legendary American talk show host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey is a private jet owner. She calls owning a jet her greatest luxury, as she can fly across the world at the drop of a hat.
The privacy a personal jet offers is one of the biggest appeals for Oprah. She’s shared that she finally decided to buy her first plane, a $25 million G4 jet, when she was approached by a woman in an airport asking her why she wasn’t hugging everyone and behaving like she did on tv.
In 2016 she bought her Gulfstream G650 Private Jet (N540W). The jet was built new in 2015, and it has a staggering value of $75 million. This mammoth jet is able to hold 148 passengers and has a sleek design.
Oprah does not fly herself; however, she enjoys the fact that she can travel in peace and comfort without battling curious crowds at the airport.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé are one of the biggest power couples in the world, so it makes sense that Jay-Z owns his own private jet. The jet was gifted to him by his wife in 2012 to celebrate his first Father’s Day.
The Bombardier Challenger 850 Beyoncé purchased as a gift for him is an impressive machine, seating up to 16 people in its plush interior. It contains the equivalent of a home in the sky, with a roomy bedroom, living room, and two bathrooms. It cost $40 Million, and the Bombardier Challenger 850 is the biggest mid-size business craft of its kind. Jay-Z’s jet is inscribed with his real name, Shawn Carter, across the body of the exterior.
As the veritable king and queen of music in the USA, it is no surprise that these two choose to ride in their own private jet away from the paparazzi.
3. John Travolta
John Travolta is likely uncontested as the biggest aviation enthusiast celebrity. He lives in a Florida neighborhood that’s a private aviation community designed around a 7,500-foot runway. and he has two landing strips leading directly to his house’s door, where he parks two jets out of his collection of five.
He says that his obsession with airplanes began at age five. Then as a teenager, he began taking flying lessons, earning his full pilot license at 23 years old. He owned a Boeing 707 for over twenty years, which he personalized and named Jett Clipper Ella, after his two children and in homage to Pan Am’s tradition of putting “clipper” on each of their planes.
The plane could fly an impressive 6,000 miles in one trip; but, he recently donated the $57 million-dollar plane to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society in Australia.
When traveling by plane, John Travolta says he prefers to fly it himself rather than have a pilot. The ability to pilot your own aircraft sure would make it easier to take a private jet to Naples or Mexico or Hawaii on a whim!
While most of us will never own a private jet (let alone a collection of planes!), with private jet rental companies becoming more popular, crossing “flying in a private plane” off your bucket list isn’t as hard as you might think. Maybe one day you’ll get to experience the luxury of private flying that entices celebrities to spend so much money.
