Water Lilies Painting By Claude Monet Sold For $55 Million

Claude Monet is one of the founders of French impressionist painting and one of the most appreciated painters of all time. Even though he was responsible for numerous exquisite series called Haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, Poplars and London Parliament, the Water Lilies paintings called Nymphéas are among some of his most celebrated works.

A stunning Nymphéas painting was recently auctioned off for about $55 million at Sotheby’s in London, but the buyer chose to remain anonymous. The painting in question dates back to 1906 and managed to fetch the second highest price ever paid for any Claude Monet painting at auction, probably because it was inspired by Monet’s own lily pond at his Giverny garden. Other notable works of art that were sold during Sotheby’s auction include the 1937 “Portrait de Femme” by Picasso ($9,1 million) as well as the 1924 “Stilleben mit Grammophon und Schwertlilien” by Max Beckmann ($8,1 million).

The second most expensive painting sold at this grand auction was “Composition with Red, Blue and Grey” by Piet Mondrian, which dates back to 1927 and fetched a price of $26 million. Claude Monet’s painting was previously housed at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, but it will now adorn the walls of a very fortunate and very rich art lover.
