Things You Need To Know About Fashion
The first logical question to answer is “What is fashion?”. We love Oscar Wild’s sarcastic definition of the concept: “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” But we all know that fashion is much more than that. It is something that only the initiated can completely understand and please note that there are schools of fashion to prove this statement.
A dictionary definition of the word would say “A popular or the latest style in clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior; the production and marketing of new styles of clothing and cosmetics; a manner of doing something.” (Oxford Dictionary). We must say that this way of defining fashion is accurate, but not complete. And this should not come to us as a surprise: no complex abstract notion can be defined in one or two sentences. This is why even this article here will only offer the basic information on the matter.
What is Fashion for People?
The answer for this question cannot begin any other way but with an “It depends”. It depends on what people we are referring to, and on their personal characteristics.
Some see fashion as a form of artistic expression, while others see it as a life style, something like a religion. But there is one thing that is common to all fashion abiders: they use it to either hide or highlight something about them: body, face, hair…even personality!
Why Care About Fashion Anyway?
Now this is a great question! It is true that there are many fashion-addicts, but there also are a lot of people who declare themselves “untouchable” fashion-wise. They don’t care what famous designers dictate, they will only wear what they like.
We don’t recommend any of these two attitudes towards fashion. Addiction and absolute rejection are equally bad. But if you manage to keep a balance between the two – you’re a winner!
So here are a few reasons to care:
1. Things that you wear send a message. It is up to you whether your message will be “out of style and untidy” or “lovely and neat”.
2. By being moderately fashionable you actually prove that you are flexible and open minded. You can accept change and you adapt to new trends according to your own style.
3. The saying goes like this “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Reality goes like this: “Badly dressed, less popular.”
4. You don’t have to spend pots of money on clothes and accessories to be in fashion. You can look just fine and sent out a positive message about yourself with a little skill and a little money.
The Catwalk – Why Is It Filled With Outrageous Clothing?
Now that you have decided to care about fashion in a moderate way, a new question pops into your mind: What in the world are those models wearing???
First of all, let us assure you that you don’t have to purchase all the stuff that you see on the catwalk. Besides, most of us couldn’t even afford to buy them! What we see on the stage is a combination of marketing and art. Yes, that’s exactly what it is. The clothes presented in such fashion events are actually exaggerations of a theme, regardless of what taste and common sense dictate. And it’s all for the sake of art….and money.
Who Decides What We Should Wear?
You do! Yes, we know that the most important designers in the world give the start, but it is us, the customers, who decide what we buy and what we don’t. However, there is an entire fashion industry behind us which tries to persuade us to buy certain products.
Prada, Miu Miu, Luis Vuitton and many more show what they have, the media presents it to the public, the store buyers order what they believe that we will wear, and opinion leaders mold our preferences after theirs. Only the strongest can oppose!
Is The Fashion Industry All About Glitter and Glamour?
No. everyone should know that not all those who work in fashion live a glamorous life, filled with money and fame. But working in this field can be extremely rewarding anyway. You may either work in the creative side of fashion or on the business side.
Designer, hair stylist, costumer, marketing administrator, purchaser and predictor are just a few of the jobs existing in this industry. And the competition is always fierce. This means that in order to reach glamour, a lot of work and talent is needed. There is so much that happens behind the scenes!
