Steve McQueen’s racing suite from the movie “Le Mans” has been recently sold for a record price at a an auction. It is now the most expensive motor-racing item, cars excluded. It sold for a whopping $984,000 (the price includes all fees and taxes).
Created by Hinchman of Indianapolis, the two-piece suite was made of Nomex cream, a very special flame-resistant material. McQueen wore this suite during the Le Mans filming, bearing the Gulf, Heuer and Firestone logos, plus an American flag on the left arm. His character’s name in the movie, Michael Delaney, appears on the chest, on the right side.
While this very important movie prop fetched almost $1 million, the Porsche that Steve McQueen drove in Le Mans sold for $1,375,000. It’s amazing how much people are willing to pay for items that once belonged to a movie star!
