Salvado Street Residence in Australia

Created by Bates Smart Architects, this single-family dwelling was imagined as a modern, low-maintenance home for a retired couple. It is located in Cottesloe, Western Australia and it stands out as a beautiful contemporary residence among the other 1970’s brick and tile houses in the area.

The architects needed to perfectly combine modernist influences with regional architectural requirements, and they managed to accomplish that very well. The house is based on a courtyard typology and it features a pond around which both the private and the public spaces are constructed.

It’s not at all difficult to recognize the public entertainment and socialization areas, as they are characterized by openness and luminosity. They are outward-oriented and feature floor-to-ceiling windows, which create a seamless transition from inside to the outside spaces. The private areas on the other hand are secluded and offer intimacy between masonry walls.

Characterized by planar forms and minimal lines, the Salvado Street Residence is truly worthy of admiration.
