Princess Diana’s Personal Letters to Margaret Hodge for Sale (3)

Margaret Hodge is the name of Princess Diana’s kindergarten teaching colleague and good friend until Diana’s sudden death in 1997. This month a collection of personal letters that the Princes of Wales wrote to her friend, Margaret, will go up for auction for an estimated £20,000 ($33,000).

The first letter in the collection dates back to 1981, when the Princess was on her honeymoon, while the last one was written in 1986, after Diana had received a wedding anniversary card from Margaret. The letters have some spelling mistakes and they are not special in any way, except for the fact that they have been written by Diana herself.

The Royal Memorabilia auction will take place on June 21 and the lot will be sold by Reeman Dansie, together with other items, like a letter written by Diana to Joseph Sanders, her financial advisor, thanking him for a pair of earrings by Chanel. Since these lots reveal a very personal part of the late Princess’ life, we wouldn’t be surprised if her sons would try and put their hands on the letters before the auction.

After their royal wedding in July, Charles and Diana went on their honeymoon in Balmoral. Later, Diana said that by that time she was already suffering from bulimia after her fiancé had called her “chubby”. She had also seen her husband wearing a pair of cufflinks that he had received from Camilla Parker Bowels.

The royal couple’s first baby boy was three months old when Diana wrote this letter to Margaret. She and Charles seemed to be happier than ever, but the Princess of Wales later admitted that during pregnancy she had thrown herself down the stairs and after having little William, she suffered from post-natal depression. Biographer Andrew Morton also reveals the fact that Diana attempted suicide by cutting her wrists with a razor blade, and by throwing herself against a class cabinet.

They did properly celebrate their fifth anniversary in 1986, but the couple later revealed that 1986 was also the year when they each started an affair: Charles with Camilla and Diana with Major James Hewitt. This is what Diana wrote to Margaret in her short letter:
