Connected Luxury: Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01

Smart watches and other wrist-worn gadgets are certainly the products of the year, especially since Apple has released its gold-plated Watch Edition priced between $10,000 and $17,000. But luxury doesn’t necessarily mean higher price. The best example is Tag Heuer’s first connected wristwatch, which will have a minuscule price compared to Apple’s gadget: $1,400. The watch will hit the stores in November 2015. Its exact details have not been published yet by the Swiss watch maker, but here is what we know about it so far.

When it comes to its looks, the Carrera Wearable 01 will look and feel similar to Carrera Heuer 01, revealed this March at Baselworld 2015. ” Somehow, one should not see from a certain distance the difference between a Carrera Heuer 01 and a Carrera Wearable 01,” Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver told the press about the upcoming product. It will not have the “Swiss Made” inscription on it, though, due to the strict laws governing the tagline – the heart of the watch has to come from Switzerland. At the heart of the Carrera Wearable 01 you will find an Intel processor, so it won’t bear the “Swiss Made” tagline – but I can assure you, it will be a Swiss watch at its heart, body and soul, with all the features that have made Swiss watches a synonym of precision and longevity.

The Carrera Wearable 01 will be the first venture the chip maker will make into the world of smart watches, although it has already collaborated on a wearable accessory last year: the MICA smart bracelet, released last year in collaboration with Opening Ceremony. On the software side it will be powered by Android Wear, with native support on Android smartphones and also working with iOS based devices.

I can’t see the Carrera Wearable 01 to be just like an average smartwatch – a mere extension of your smartphone that you can wear on your wrists. Tag Heuer has an image to maintain, after all – it is a provider of high quality Swiss Made watches that are stylish and elegant, but precise and valuable at the same time. On an average smartwatch you can exchange messages with friends, get notifications, and provide hours of entertainment online.

In particular you can play casino games online at Euro Palace Mobile Casino. Because the casino has been designed to work with all major mobile devices, you can play online games at Euro Palace and browse through the special offers that are open to players, directly on a mobile device. They have the widest range of mobile casino games that I have ever seen: everything from mobile slots to tables and video poker. What’s more, you can create your casino account directly on your mobile device. You cna even do your banking this way. I love anything that is convenient and playing at Euro Palace mobile is just that.  However, I haven’t found it easy to do anything like this on the Carrera Wearable 01, from which I expected more, both in style and precision.

One thing that’s not yet completely clear for me is whether the device will have a traditional dial or a touch screen. Jean-Claude Biver was cited saying that “…the hardware and the software will come from Silicon Valley. But the watch case, the dial, the design, the idea, the crown, that part of the watch will, of course, be Swiss.” This hints at the watch having a physical dial rather than a touch screen, a bit like Hoptroff’s No. 8. But then again, I might interpret Biver’s words wrong. Oh well – it remains to be seen in November. The Carrera Wearable 01 is also hinted to have a battery life of up to 40 hours, more than double compared to the 18 hours Apple Watch has to offer.
