Archipelago Cinema – A Stunning Project in Thailand

Archipelago Cinema is an outstanding project initiated by the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi Foundation in collaboration with architect Ole Scheeren. Set in the Andaman Sea, Thailand, off the island of Yao Noi, this was a temporary floating structure created for the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi Thai film festival. The idea for the bold project came from Six Senses Yao Noi owner Chomwan Weeraworawit, the main organizer of the festival.

Borrowing local recycled materials and rafting techniques (the locals here have specialized in using rafts for fishing), the makers of this out-of-this-world cinema managed to create the ultimate place for enjoying great movies. The rich are already in love with the concept of exotic movie theaters and outdoor screenings, but this project has surpassed everyone’s expectations with its unconventional setting.

The floating theater had its huge screen in front of some limestone protrusions in the sea, and the audience enjoyed the screenings from comfy chairs set on modular floating rafts. There was even an orchestra on the rafts that played the soundtrack of the 1924 Peter Pan movie, as the rest of the audience enjoyed the entire magical experience. After the memorable event ended, the rafts and the entire setting was disassembled, and the materials used for its erection were given back to the locals, leaving no trace of the high-tech entertainment structure on the water. Simply amazing!
