24K Gold-Infused Baseball for the State Farm Home Run Derby

The official Gold Baseball for this year’s State Farm Home Run Derby in Phoenix, Arizona, has been unveiled: it’s the first one ever to be literally infused with 24K gold. As seen in the picture, one leather panel was given the special treatment. The process is 100% environmentally friendly and it does not affect the quality of the ball. Even though gold is a pretty heavy metal, the ball is not heavier than it is supposed to be, and it still flies normally when hit.

With a special technique, the precious metal is injected directly into the leather, but the process has no negative effect on the physical characteristics of the ball. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $149.99 for each ball. State Farm and MLB announced that they will donate $30,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America for every homerun with a normal baseball and $18,000 every time a golden ball leaves the yard.
